Urmila Matondkar,(born on February 4, 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) is a well-known Indian Bollywood actress. She was earlier known for her bold image. She was India's sex symbol. Today, she is considered a serious actress with many critical acclaimed movies to her name.

Career

She started her career as a child artist; perhaps the best known of her early movies is the 1983 Masoom. She made her film debut as an adult actress with the film Narasimha along with Sunny Deol. She also starred in the fantasy film Chamatkar along with Shahrukh Khan. Her first big hit was the 1995 Rangeela, in which she played a star-struck dancer. She was nominated for a Filmfare Best Actress Award for her work in Rangeela. Her first film with Director Ram Gopal Verma was Drohi. She has starred in many subsequent RGV pictures, such as Daud, Satya, Kaun, Mast, Jungle, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, Bhoot, and Ek Hasina Thi.
Her most notable films since Rangeela have been Judaai for which she received various award nominations for Best Supporting Actress, Satya where she proved her strong dramatic abilities and Bhoot where she played a ghost-possessed woman. Her performance in the latter was well acclaimed and earned her her first Filmfare Award for best performer and various Best Actress awards at different award ceremonies. She also turned in strong dramatic performances in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya - where she played an obsessive Villain role, Pinjar, Tehzeeb, Ek Hasina Thi, Naina , Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and Banaras. Mantondkar has been recognized as one of India's most versatile actresses for these performances.

She is considered to be an outstanding dancer and has been a featured performer in many Bollywood "item numbers". Perhaps her best-known item number is the Chamma Chamma sequence from the 1998 China Gate. A brief Westernized version of Chamma Chamma appeared in Baz Luhrman's 2001 film musical, Moulin Rouge! -- minus Urmila. Other hit numbers include the opening song of Company, Aaiye Aajaye from the hit film Lajja. She has recently been signed to perform the item song in the Ram Gopal Verma remake of the classic 1975 film Sholay titled Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay. She will be playing the role originally played by the legendary Helen. Recently she has even lent her voice for Asha Bhonsle's album Asha and Friends Vol 1(2007) for the duet song "Mehbooba Dilruba". Important note is that Bhosle sang the maximum number of songs in the 90`s and the 2000`s, for Urmila. She is also rumoured to play the vamp in the movie Do Bahnon ki Kahani which is a sort of a remake on the Korean thriller mystery movie Janghwa, Hongrye
on. This would be the third time she plays villain in a movie after Kaun and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya.
