Vivek Anand Oberoi or Viveik Oberoi,(born September 3, 1976 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India), is a Bollywood actor. He is the son of actor Suresh Oberoi and is related to Shikha Uberoi and actor Akshay Oberoi.
Biography
Early life
Vivek Oberoi was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu]]. He attended Mayo College, Ajmer and Mithibai college in Mumbai. At an actors' workshop in London he was spotted by the director of NYU, who took Oberoi to New York City to complete his Masters Degree in film acting. He then did some scriptwriting before making a break in films.
Career
Oberoi made his debut in Ram Gopal Varma's Company. The film was a critically acclaimed hit and his performance was applauded. He received Filmfare Awards in the Best Debut as well as the Best Supporting Actor category. He then starred in the action films, Road and Dum, in which his performance was appreciated.
He starred alongside Rani Mukerji in Yash Raj Films Saathiya (2002) directed by Shaad Ali. The film was critically and commercially successful though it was attributed more to Rani Mukerji's appeal. However he received Best Actor nominations at various award functions. He also starred in the comic film Masti (2004) with Aftab Shivdasani and Riteish Desmukh. The film in spite of negative reviews became a surprise box office hit. His 2005 release Kaal (2005) was also successful. He was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai.
Recently he appeared in Omkara an adaptation of Shakespeare's play Othello which was critically acclaimed in India as well as overseas as 'Kesu Firangi' . And though the character was placed in the bad lands of UP, Vivek displayed a different nuances of the character as a 'Gangster'. He was critically appreciated again in Omkara
Vivek will be seen again portraying the role of the dreaded gangster 'Maya Dolas' in 'Shootout at Lokhandwala'. st opposite the Protagonist 'Sanjay Dutt' (Shamsher Khan) in the real life 'Encounter' drama that rocked the Nation!!
Vivek Oberoi method acting helps in understanding the different psychological traits of 'Gangsters' in film right from Company, Omkara & 'Shoot out at Lokhandwala'. In every gangster roles, Vivek realistically portrayed different dimensions to the character. He literally lives the character.
Since he had made a stellar debut in Company and was the most talked about sensation. His portrayal of the dreaded don Maya Dolas is a step above his portrayal of Chandu in Company . He also portrayed the human aspect of 'Maya Dolas' besides his obsession to work- whether that meant extortion or murder. Maya Dolas was unlike the stereotype goon. He was an obsessive workaholic in crime. His role is critically acclaimed and Vivek Oberoi is back in track even after the average success of the film.
He recently made his debut on the television show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahoo Thi.
His next film will be Mission Istanbul directed by Apoorva Lakia and the film has a huge cast which consists of Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Tusshar Kapoor, Shabbir Ahlluwalia and one more actor will also be in the movie. What's interesting about this movie is that Abhishek and Vivek will be sharing screen space after Abhishek's marriage to Aishwarya Vivek's ex-girlfriend.
Personal life
Vivek was previously engaged to model Gurpreet Gill but the engagement was broken due to unknown reasons. Soon after, Oberoi claimed to be dating actress Aishwarya Rai, but the two have broken up after Rai dumped him
His press conference, where he claimed that Salman Khan was threatening him, made national news.
Additionally, Vivek is active in volunteer work. For example, he sponsored a village after the Indian Ocean Tsunami. He also released Tanya Khubchandani and Sandeep Chowta's government approved anti substance abuse documentary
